Civil Rights Oral Histories
This collection consists of interviews focusing on the Civil Rights struggle of African Americans in the Mississippi Delta during the 1950s and 1960s. Key topics covered include black sharecropping in the Delta, the first African Americans on local school boards and integration at Delta State University. Transcriptions for the following interviews are available online: Fletcher Abrams; Mrs. Mose Allison; Frank Barber; Iva Brown; Albert Day & Rodney Wilkinson; Mr. Delaware, Mr. Vonell, & Mr. John Toliver; Gladys Goodman; James Goodman; Sylvester Matthews (Rosedale Negro Churches); Tommy Narron; John Pearson (two interviews).
Jerry Dallas Delta Cooperative Farm Collection [See the finding aid here.]
Various sources from the Delta Cooperative Farm used by Dr. Jerry Dallas for his book about the Southern Tenant Farmers' Union. The Delta Cooperative Farm was started in 1936 by Sherwood Eddy in Bolivar County, Mississippi. The collection also includes notes and correspondence on cooperative farming.
Lucy Somerville Howorth Papers [link to EAD finding aid coming soon]
Correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, and other materials related to the professional and personal life of Lucy Somerville Howorth. Howorth was an attorney from Cleveland, Mississippi, who actively worked for women’s rights and civil rights of African Americans. She was a judge, a state legislator, and was very active in many political groups.
Lower Mississippi Delta Development Commission Papers [link to EAD finding aid coming soon]
Memos, correspondence, reports, and other materials related to the work of the Lower Mississippi Delta Development Commission (LMDDC). The commission was created to study the obstacles that hindered economic development and prosperity in the Mississippi Delta.
Florence Sillers Ogden Papers [link to EAD finding aid coming soon]
Newspaper clippings, notes, correspondence, and other materials related to Florence Sillers Ogden’s newspaper column. Ogden’s commentary on social news and activities, politics and government appeared in the newspapers in Greenville and Jackson, Mississippi. Materials in the collection also document Ogden’s participation in several women’s groups, particularly the Mississippi Delta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Walter Sillers Jr. Papers [link to EAD finding aid coming soon]
Legal, political, and personal papers of Walter Sillers, Jr. (1888-1966), an attorney, planter, and state legislator. Sillers represented Bolivar County in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1916 to 1966, serving as Speaker of the House for twenty-two years, and was a leader of the States' Rights Democratic Party (known as the "Dixiecrats") in 1948.
