Scrapbooks, a photographs, news clippings, a transcript of an oral history interview, a court brief from the United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circus, and film of Mrs. Bates, who in 1948 initiated a lawsuit against the Jackson Municipal Separate School District for the equalization of pay for black and white teachers.

The Reverend William Albert Bender (1886-1957) served as chaplain of Tougaloo College, a historically black college in Tougaloo, Mississippi, beginning in 1934. He was also an active member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, serving as president of the State Conference of Branches and organizing new branches across Mississippi. The collection includes Bender’s writings on desegregation in Mississippi, printed material from events at Tougaloo College, and Bender’s correspondence with the NAACP and Tougaloo presidents Charles B. Austin and Judson L. Cross.

Correspondence, poetry, notes, and diaries of the former director of Coleman Library, one of the major developers of the Tougaloo Archives and a charter member of the Society of Mississippi Archivists. Letters from nationally-known literary figures form part of her personal correspondence. Includes drafts of published as well as unpublished poems. Significant material on the development of Piney Woods School and the role that Shedd played as one of its distinguished alumni.

This collection consists of papers relating to three separate publications by Dr. Clarice T. Campbell and the Reverend Dr. Oscar A. Rogers, Jr. The bulk of the collection relates to the publication of their coauthored work, Mississippi: The View from Tougaloo (1979), which documents the history of Tougaloo College from its founding in 1869 to the civil rights era. This collection also contains a copy of Clarice Campbell’s 1993 compilation of letters entitled Witness to Change: Letters from the South, 1956-1965, which documents her observations of the civil rights movement as it was unfolding in Mississippi, South Carolina, California, Virginia, and Alabama. The third part of the collection consists of Dr. Oscar Rogers’ typescript and other papers concerning the publication of My Mother Cooked My Way Through Harvard with These Creole Recipes (1972), as well as some personal ephemera.

Materials relating to the Freedom Riders, a group of racially-integrated activists organized by CORE (Congress for Racial Equality) who challenged segregation in public transportation by staging “Freedom Rides” across the South in 1961. The collection focuses on the events surrounding the Freedom Riders’ arrival, arrests, and incarceration while in Mississippi. In addition, it also contains programs, leaflets, and other printed items documenting reunions and conferences pertaining to the Freedom Riders held in 1991 and 2001.

Hamer (Fannie Lou) Collection

Original speeches, personal interviews, personal photographs of different aspects of Mrs. Hamer's life. Includes copied material of her role in the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, a copy of her autobiography, magazine articles and newspaper clippings. Papers of Gordon Henderson, a professor of political science at Millsaps College and Tougaloo College. The collection contains manuscripts of Henderson's political science writings and his files regarding Peggy Jean Connor, et al v. Paul B. Johnson, Jr., et al and other civil rights litigation in the 1970s.

Materials relating to racial integration of the public schools of Madison County, Mississippi, in 1966, when two African-American families, the Galloways and Archies, decided to send their children to the local white school. The collection contains recollections, written in 2004, by Lucille Galloway and her daughters, Carolyn Galloway Roberts, Gwendolyn Galloway Smith, and Patricia Galloway-Smith, describing their experiences of integration.

Adam Daniel Beittel served as President of Tougaloo College, a historically black college in Tougaloo, Mississippi, from 1960 to 1964, when the college served as a haven for civil rights activism. The collection consists of minutes, correspondence, printed material, and photographs. Topics covered by the collection include the Mission to Mississippi ministerial alliance in response to the jailing of freedom riders in 1961, the threatened revocation of Tougaloo’s accreditation in 1964 by Lieutenant Governor Carroll Gartin and other Mississippi politicians, the 1964 complaint filed by the United Church of Christ against local television station WLBT, and the City of Jackson’s 1963 injunction forbidding civil rights demonstrations, City of Jackson vs. John A. Salter, et al., in which Beittel was named as a defendant.

Silver (Carol Ruth) Papers, 1961

Correspondence, newsclippings, photographs, copies of police mug shots, and a diary concerning the Freedom Riders and their imprisonment at Parchman Penitentiary in 1961. Also includes a handmade chess set on Parchman Farms letterhead, made of bread and blood, created by the Freedom Riders during their incarceration.

Legal case files and correspondence of the three organizations that provided the majority of legal counsel for the civil rights movement in Mississippi and Louisiana: the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc.; the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law; and the Lawyers' Constitutional Defense Committee. Correspondence, diary, printed material, and newsclippings related to a variety of civil rights topics. Aurelia Young, a retired professor of music at Jackson State University and Tougaloo College, is the widow of Jack Young, a leading civil rights lawyer in Mississippi who worked closely with the NAACP. Also includes reel-to-reel tapes of Young's poetry reading and field recordings by the NAACP regarding distribution of food stamps.
