Collection Survey

Establishing intellectual control over an institution's collection holdings is an essential first step for digitization. Each repository will need to answer the following questions about their collections:

  • How many collections do you have?
  • How many of these collections have existing finding aids?

For each collection, the following questions will need to be answered:

  • How complete and accurate is the finding aid for this collection?
  • What type of material is in the collection? Examples: Paper, film (positive or negative), photographs, artwork, video, audio, 3-D object, 2-D objects like textiles, items of mixed materials (Ex: scrapbooks, or pages with both text and images), typescripts, glass negatives, etc.
  • Do you want to digitize any items from this collection?
  • Has the donor of the collection given permission to digitize items from this collection?

A questionnaire/checklist (with these and other questions) is available. Click here to view a sample, completed questionnaire/checklist.
